An English poet, Addison's intimate friend; born at Bridekirk in Cumberland, 1686; died at Bath, April 23, 1740. His principal works are: "The Prospect of Peace", a poem; "The Royal Progress", verses celebrating the arrival of George I.; translation of the first book of the Iliad (1715); "Kensington Garden" (1722); "Elegy on Addison"; and the popular ballad "Colin and Lucy";
