An American naturalist and writer of travels; born near Plainfield, Ind., 1854. He was for a number of years chief taxidermist of the United States National Museum, Washington. He has written: "Two Years in the Jungle" (1885); "The Buffalo Hunt" (1887); "Free Rum on the Congo" (1887); "Taxidermy and Zoological Collecting"; "Canoe and Rifle on the Orinoco"; etc. Since 1896, Director of N.Y. Zoological Park.
