An American prose-writer and art critic; born in Leipsic, Germany, Feb. 11, 1837; died at Littleton, N. H., Sept. 15, 1900. He came to this country in 1849. He was the editor of the American Art Review and author of "Art Education and Art Patronage in the United States" (1882). He became afterwards Curator of Prints and Engravings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He wrote a history of color painting.
