An English journalist, theatrical manager, and author; born at Hoxton, Sept 8, 1827 He was a constant contributor to Household Words, All the Year Round, etc. In 1868 he became lessee and manager of the Gaiety Theatre, and now controls many theatrical enterprises in London and the provinces. Besides several original and adapted plays, his works include: "Under Bow Bells" (1859); "Rubbing the Gilt Off" (1860); "Ragged London" (1861); "Miscellanies: Stories and Essays" (1874); "Footlights" (1883); "Gayeties Chronicles" (1900).
